SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
UN SDG Goals and its Effect on Roma Communities: The SDG Initiative was established during the 2030 agenda for sustainable development on the first of January 2016. The objective of the initiative was to develop goals with the aspiration to
a) end all forms of poverty,
b) combat climate change and its ongoing effects at a global scale, and
c) oppose all forms of discrimination and prejudices.
These key components are the basic foundation of the “No One Left Behind,” agenda. The outcome of the No One Left Behind was to enable cross data networking as a collaborative collective in an effort to mobilize, analyze, debrief, report, and implement adequate measures to correct the underlying issues.
Therefore, what impacts a few affects us all. The Roma are an underdeveloped group having limited resources and access to public and social programs, education, healthcare, medicine, housing, and equal opportunity employment. Subsequently, the no one left behind agenda is a very forward thinking construct and applicable to the Roma communities as it entitles them to meet procedural UN goals as well as prompts engagement between governments and the camps. Dialogue and cooperation at an agency level and communal level is key when developing a pathway towards Roma citizenship and inclusion.
